Myleene Klass, brand ambassador for Start-rite shoes, has just launched her first range for the brand. Here are her top tips on stress-free shoe shopping with young kids:
1. Make it fun
If children enjoy the experience, they’ll have a better approach to future trips– making it easier and more enjoyable for mummy too!
2. Give yourself plenty of time
Any parent will agree that shopping with children in tow is no quick process, but adding extra time to get feet properly measured before trying on shoes will mean getting to the right shoes with minimal fuss – perfect for a child’s very short attention span! Remember to get your child’s feet measured every six to eight weeks for little ones learning to walk, then three to four months as they get older.
3. Know what to look out for
New shoes must be fitted correctly so ask the assistant to talk you through the process. For instance, prodding the toe area to ensure there’s room for growth is important. Not many children’s shoe manufacturers allow for this, but Start-rite shoes are designed with additional strengthening around the heal area to hold the ankle firmly and allow for growing space without slipping.
4. Let them experiment
Let your child choose styles and colours that they are drawn to. As parents we have developed our own sense of style, but a child’s shoes can be one of their first moments of expression. They may well choose a style that you’d never dare to wear!
5. Hand-me-downs don’t suit shoes
Although it’s usually a sensible option, no two pairs of feet are the same and it’s so important to ensure your child is wearing the right fit for them. It’s an investment in your child’s feet and health.
