Pay-as-you go cleaners: the perfect solution?

Lorraine HellerToday, I’m going to do something I’ve never done before. I’m going to get a cleaner.

Just the thought of it fills me with mixed feelings: great relief that for once someone else will be taking on this endless burden; guilt that I’ll have someone scrubbing away while I’m off doing something else; and panic that this luxury will be eating up a substantial part of my budget.

I can’t help but feel that the money would be better spent elsewhere – or if not, that it can sit safely in a savings account.

Luckily, I’ve found what I hope is a perfect compromise for the money-commitment phobic: a pay-as-you-clean service.

I came across CleanRooms.com, a London cleaning service that lets you book a cleaner on a one-off basis as and when you need one. Although the booking system is a bit clunky, you can log on at the last minute and book a cleaner for next-day delivery!

The best bit is that you can get temporary relief from the chores, without having to commit a regular sum of money. The cost is the same as other cleaning services I’ve seen around London – £10 an hour – but when you book online you’ll get a first-time discount of four hours for £30.

Now, I have to say that I haven’t yet tried the service, and you may find me ranting against it next week. But for now, I have high hopes that it’s a convenient answer to my dilemma.

If you’re looking for a helping hand with your household chores, take a look at this guide to cleaning services around the country.

But if you’re not ready to spend the extra cash, here are some tips to help make those household chores a more streamlined and less painful process!

  • Set up an easy laundry system. By being organised with your drying space and laundry processes, you can save yourself some precious time and effort.
  • Get the kids to help with chores.  Things like making beds, tidying toys and helping with the washing are easy enough for little ones and will take away some of your burden.
  • Organise toys. Toys can take over the home, so use boxes and labels to make sure everything has its place. Then teach the kids to stick to the system!
  • Multitask. Clean the bathroom while the kids shower, go over bills while supervising homework. Think of cunning ways to pair up tasks so you can save yourself some time.
  • Declutter. Get rid of junk, sort out your to-do list. An organised life makes tasks easier and faster!
  • Organise your household – and its occupants! Set up a system that can work for everyone. This lightens the load on you, but ensures things still get done.
