Is going to university worth it?

I never wanted to go to university (and dont think I have suffered for it) but if my children want to, they will start their life with huge debt unless I save for their "college fund" now. So is it really worth it?

Answers:

I suppose it really depends on what type of career your child wants to go into. Some careers you have to go to university for (Law/Medicine/etc) and others you don't. I personally didn't go to university however my brother did and he now has a degree in IT. The funny thing is though, my husband also works in IT in a very similar role to what my brother does now. The difference is my husband has no degree in IT but earns twice as much as my brother does. This is due to the experience he has had in his position which my brother lacks due to time spent in university. My husband and i have set up a savings account for my little boy for the future and if at the time he decided uni is for him then we have the money for it, however if he decides it is not for him he can use it for something equally as important.

I didn't go to Uni and neither did my husband and we both had/have good jobs so I would say it isn't the be all and end all.  I am open to my kids goiing if they want to, but would feel really sad at the thought of them saddling themselves with massive debts and still no great job offers at the end of it.  I would be more than happy for my son (or daughter) to learn a trade such as builder or plumber  through an apprenticeship.
