It was only last year that reports suggested over 60 tonnes of vitamins are thrown away by households in the UK every year. That figure equates to over 4.2 million tonnes of ‘good’ food. Even more alarmingly, on average, that means each family in the UK is annually wasting over £700 worth of food that is perfectly nutritious and ok to eat.
Potatoes, bread, and milk were amongst the food products most commonly wasted, as well as meats served on the bone such as chicken, turkey, or lamb. So, why do we throw away so much food when it’s perfectly ok to eat?
There are a number of reasons why, but quite often, leftovers are sent to the bin prematurely simply due to the fact that many people aren’t sure what to do with them. As we pointed out previously, there are some foods, like the avocado, that might require a bit more experimentation to find tasty ways of serving them when they leftover or reaching their sell-by-date.
The benefits of using up your leftovers
Research has indicated that in some foods the leftovers can actually be healthier than the freshly cooked version. This is particularly the case for starch-based foods such as pasta or potatoes where the freshly cooked form causes a surge in digestion, sending sugar into the blood and triggering a release of insulin. It’s a quite a heavy process for your body to handle repeatedly.
Obviously, one of the major benefits of using your leftover foods is that over time you should save quite a bit of money. Throwing away half a roast chicken because it was left out after the meal and forgotten about can be one of the most costly mistakes in the kitchen. Meat isn’t exactly cheap, particularly good quality, organic meat. So, we try our best to recommend ways to make the most of it.
We found a few suggestions for meals that were not only tasty but convenient to make with your leftover roast chicken. Of course, in some of these recipes, you may find that any leftover meat works just as well. That’s all part of the fun!
