We were lucky enough to move into our house over 8 years ago but we hadn’t really done too much to it! A new build house that came with a cream colour carpet and light walls, but, now: it feels like a sea of beige: boring and lacklustre and time for an interiors makeover!
The first thing we needed to focus on was updating the floor, we knew we had to change the beige carpet but we weren’t entirely sure on what floor to go for – wooden, laminate or something different?
Problem – The Floor
We felt the carpet was old, shabby and stained and the room seemed to blend together with not much definition or statement. The carpet had never been practical, with our young daughter constantly spilling things and colouring in the living room was just out of the question. Throw a feisty Jack Russell into the equation and we knew that the beige carpet just wanted practical enough for us all!
The room was just not working for us all, we were desperate for a makeover and we felt we needed a fresh contemporary scheme that was stylish, practical and fun!
Solution: A floor that was hard wearing, light, practical and was value for money
We spent a long time researching all the wooden floor and laminate options. We decided that laminate flooring would be the best option as it fitted all of our requirements including; budget, suitability with children and dogs and plenty of contemporary shades and modern styles to choose from.
After looking at Quick-Step’s laminates we choose the Impressive collection, a hard-wearing natural laminate with visible grains in the wood that you can actually touch, so it feels like the real thing.
From the 16 shades available from the Quick-Step Impressive Collection, we choose a light modern ash effect with a sprinkling of grey as this would complement the Scandinavian accessories that we wanted to use in the makeover. The floor we used is Saw Cut Oak Beige.
It also has a unique water-repellent ‘HydroSeal’ coating, which means it’s the most waterproof laminate flooring ever produced.
We really felt it was good to invest in a good laminate as we appreciate the quality, badly made laminate will chip, crack and swell when in contact with water. With Impressive, it uses what Quick-Step call Scratch Guard Technology, which means it is up to 10 times more scratch resistant than other laminates, and also comes with a 25 year warranty – the perfect family floor in my opinion!
Now we really did want to keep costs low, so my husband decided he could lay the floor, we did our research and looked at the really useful installation video on the Quick Step Flooring website we also contacted some local installation companies who gave us some tips and they told us that they find Quick Step to be one of the easiest floors to lay due to its ‘click’ function so thankfully my husband went for it and we managed to save the £800 installation cost that was quoted
As well as the main floor area in the living room, My husband laid the Quick Step Flooring throughout the hall to achieve the seamless look. It also helped make the hall look a lot larger which is one of the reasons we laid this light laminate floor, the results look amazing!
Thankfully, Quick-Step Flooring sell all of the matching accessories which enabled my husband to create a beautifully neat finish.
The new flooring was similar tones to the sofa which lifted and lightened the room a lot. We used a white paint to give a blank canvas to the walls so we could add texture and colour through all the accessories: art, pictures and cushions. We decided to add some dimension to the room by painting the fire place a beautiful deep blue which brings the room together so stunningly and compliments the copper lights and mirror while adding some richness to the scheme.
Choosing the blinds was a very important decision as we wanted the blinds to compliment all aspects of the room, we wanted to modernise the windows so we went for some wood blinds that finished the room off perfectly.
The perfect complement to a Scandinavian room is white wooden blinds, we chose ones with grey slats to tie in with the rest of the interior. Blinds from Blinds 2 Go – Artic white and Paloma
We are so happy with our new floor and new room, it’s been amazing and we can thoroughly recommend Quick Step Flooring as the perfect floor for families.
Finishing touches were added with flowers, plants and candles, never underestimate the importance of this as they can bring the room alive.
