Although last minute family holidays have been a growing trend in recent years, new research from TravelSupermarket has revealed that over half of us will wait until the Olympic closing ceremony to jet off.
We’ve picked 11 of the best ideas for price-savvy last minute family holidays, which could mean savings on your holiday budget of over £500.
Holiday resort operator Club Med posts new late deals every Friday on its website– we found summer offers with reductions of up to £420 per family of four on all-inclusive holidays.
Holiday parks often offer last minute deals to fill up empty spaces and year-round special offers. Butlins’ autumn breaks start from £48pp, room-only, for Friday to Monday breaks at its Minehead camp, saving 40%. Haven Holidays has seven-night family breaks in August from £549 at its UK-wide caravan parks.
Late deal websites
Book a holiday for departure within eight weeks through late deal websites such as Late Deals, for up to a 70% discount with some of the UK’s biggest operators. Other websites for good last minute family holidays include travelsupermarket.com and Teletext Holidays.
Hire a campervan! Camper 4 Hire has a week in an iconic VW campervan, from £699 (inc VAT) for August, down from £840. Alternatively, hire straight from private owners, which can work out even cheaper, through Camperbug.
English summer under canvas might not appeal this year, so head to the Continent for last minute family holidays. Eurocamp has last-minute tent and mobile home getaways in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal – with 25% off before 10 August. Plus take the car and family on a Dover to Calais ferry with P&O Ferries for less than £80 return in August, traveling midweek.
At least the rain won’t disturb you at Centerparcs’ four sites, with their indoor “Swimming Paradises”, spas and activities. Late availability prices start from £539 for a Friday to Monday break at the end of August, at Whinfell Forest in Cumbria, staying in a two-bedroom Woodland Lodge.
Adventurous families can pick up a week’s activity holiday for four in the UK from £750 with PGL holidays at the moment. Further afield, a seven-night Normandy adventure holiday departing 12 August came in at £379 per adult (two children under 18 go free), including archery, canoeing, and accommodation in a chateau grounds (excludes travel).
Discount boat hire
There’s nothing half so worth doing as messing about in boats, according to Wind in the Willows. Book last minute and you can do it half price too. Check out narrowboating late deals on Discount Boat Hire, with 40% savings. We found a seven-night break on a seven-berth narrowboat leaving from Alvechurch, Worcestershire, on 11 August for £1333.50, saving £571.50.
UK cottage rentals are a great budget option this year with high availability – and slashed prices. Cottages 4 U late deals section has cottages with up to 50% off. We found seven nights (week of 11 August) at the thatched Blackbird Cottage in Kent (sleeps four) from £599, a 40% saving.
James Villa Holidays
If you need sun, then try a villa or gite; rental companies such as James Villa Holidays have unbooked weeks and money saving offers. A week at Les Lavandins, in Provence, is now £233pp including flights (departing 29 September). The villa sleeps eight, and has a private pool and sun terrace.
