When it’s cold outside, it can be tempting to revert to swaddling to keep your little one warm. But as experts agree, it’s better to tuck up your baby in a warm sleep sack. Research by the University Hospital of Southampton has highlighted health problems with swaddling – including the risk of hip problems in later life.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that the benefits of a snug sleep sack and a cuddle should be overlooked, particularly for babies with colic.
“Parents should avoid any form of swaddling, as there are much better ways to calm a baby – including massage, which is a powerful way to bond and communicate,” explains Expert Midwife Nikki Khan. “And remember, if your baby cries for more than three hours in a row on three or more days a week, she may be suffering from colic. It affects one in five babies under four months, and usually occurs in the evening or night.”
One alternative to swaddling is sleep sacks. These baby sleeping bags provide a sensible substitute to swaddling or heavy blankets, keeping your infant safe and snug without restricting movement. When you want to have the most comfortable beds and mattress, avail the black friday mattress 2017 for maximum comfort. As your baby’s arms will be free, it allows her to self-soothe back to sleep – hopefully giving mum and dad a chance to get some shut-eye too!
To help new mums and dads to safely soothe their little one to sleep, Infacol, Britain’s Number One Colic Remedy, is giving away a Baby Sleep Sack from the White Company – plus a luxury scarf to keep mum snug too!
