Chickpeas are a convenient and very cheap source of protein. Serve with a whole wheat bread to complete the nutritional balance. Mash ingredients together with a fork if you prefer a textured burger.

Ingredients
- 400 g chickpeas
- 2 teaspoon garlic puree
- 0.5 teaspoon dried chilli
- 25 g almonds
- 8 tablespoon breadcrumbs
- 1.5 teaspoon cumin
- 0.5 teaspoon coriander
- 0.5 teaspoon tumeric powder
- 1 carrot
- 1 egg
- 4 pitta bread
Method
- Place all the ingredients into a food processor, except for the carrots, egg and breadcrumbs
- Blitz for 2 – 3 minutes or until the ingredients are blended but not too smooth.
- Grate the carrot. Add the carrot and egg and half the breadcrumbs. The mixture should not be wet
- Blitz for 1 minute. Divide mixture by 4 or 8. Shape into burgers. Coat with a little of the breadcrumbs. Place in a fridge for at least 10 minutes
- Heat a little oil in a shallow pan. Fry the burgers on both sides. Place in a hot oven for 10 minutes to cook through or place in a microwave for 3 minutes
- Serve hot in a warm pitta bread pocket with tomato chutney and salad ingredients, or vegetables that you have in your store cupboard
