Parents up and down the country had to scrimp and save to provide their children with new kit last month as the new academic year began.
And it seems our efforts may have had a knock-on effect on the UK retail sector, as back-to-school and university purchases both helped to boost sales during September.
Official statistics show that a 0.6% month-on-month growth in retail volumes was recorded during the month.
A 3.2% month-on-month rise in household goods sales supported this, with computers and laptops among the items families bought to prepare for the 2011/12 academic year.
Last month's rise in retail volumes came as a shock to some analysts, who had expected flat sales volumes prior to the release of the Office for National Statistics research.
