Educational activities for kids: North

Get fruity at the Autumn Harvest Day at St Andrews Botanic Garden on 30 September, when you can identify and sample harvest items, make corn dollies, listen to stories and learn about edible fungi, wild berries and much more. 11am-3.30pm (01334 476452).

En guard! They’ve seen it in the Olympics, now children aged 7+ can learn how to parry and thrust at the Lisburn Gladiators Fencing Club with free taster sessions being held on 20 September and 4, 11 and 18 October at St Patricks Centre in Lisburn. 6pm-7.30pm (0845 40 33623).

Chat to the proud owners of the vehicles, engines and fairground organs at the North West Vintage Rally on 29-30 September and learn all about their roles in times past. Open 10am-5pm each day at Victoria Park in Widnes (0151 511 8914).

Get the bug at the Creepy Crawlies Family Fun Day at Barnard Castle’s Bowes Museum in Co Durham. The bug-themed activities on 30 October include making finger puppets and cards. Adult admission is £9, under-16s are free. 11am-4pm (01833 690606).

Educational activities for kids: Central

RSPB guides are on hand every weekend to explain about the red kites that visit the feeding station at Forestry Commission Wales Bwlch Nant Yr Arian near Aberystwyth. Open 10am-5pm, with lunch for the birds served at 2pm. Nature walks, pond dipping and more, too (029 2035 3008).

Delve behind the scenes at The Museums Resource Centre in Witney, Oxfordshire on 14 October, 10am-4pm. At this open day the family can learn all about the preservation of Oxfordshire’s archaeological and historical collections (01865 300972).

Learn all about the world of horseracing and meet its stars at Newmarket Open Day on 23 September. Children under 12 are admission free (adult price £15) for the racing yards from 9.30am-12.30pm and the Rowley Mile Show from 1-4.30pm (01638 675 500).

Educational activities for kids: South

Lindy hop along to the Wilton Shopping Village in Salisbury on 13 October (10am-5pm) and 14 October (10am-4pm) to the Discover Vintage Fair. Admire the latest prints, textiles and must-have styles for fashion and home from decades past (01722 741211).

Tooth talk, dental details and sunny smiles; learn about oral care at Colgate’s Keeping Britain Smiling Exhibition at Westfield Shopping Centre in London’s Shepherds Bush. The entertaining and interactive exhibition appears from 12-21 October (020 3371 2300).

Go green! The Big Green Weekend at the Singleton Environment Centre in Ashford is running a packed day of activities on 6 October, including conservation skills, a talk on bees and pond dipping. Suggested donation of £2 per activity. 10am-4pm (01233 666 519).
