The skies of the UK will soon be filled with people jetting off to enjoy the summer sun, but for some families it could be an expensive option that is way beyond their budget.
However, it needn’t mean all your holiday plans are grounded. MyFamilyClub’s Gemma Johnson visits Huma and her family to see how they plan to have budget holidays with the family this year, and offer some great tips.
Shop around for the best deal
When looking for budget holidays it’s important to do your research. Ask at your local travel agent when is the best time to take advantage of cheap tickets. Often you can find good value package deals that include flights, accommodation, breakfast, dinner and equipment hire for all the family – so it can work out less expensive than you might think.
Remember to plan ahead for tricks and treats to entertain the children at the airport, during your journey and on holiday too. Bring along activities, toys and colouring books to occupy your little monsters. You can pick these up much cheaper from discount stores before you go, saving on expensive airport stores. Stack up on treats too, rather than having to pay airport prices.
Exchange loyalty points
Supermarket loyalty points can be swapped for theme park tickets, flights, ferry tickets, car hire abroad, and more. Often your points could be worth up to four times the value if you don’t spend them at the supermarket. So it’s worth stocking up on your points and browsing the loyalty scheme website to see what you can exchange them for.
Cheap train travel
If you fancy budget holidays in the UK, travel by train and make use of a Family and Friends Railcard. For £28 a year you save a third on adult train fares, 60% on child fares and up to four adults and four kids can travel on a single card, proving great value for money.
There are several companies out there that help families swap homes for a cheap budget break. Just post details of your location, pick a place you like and get in touch with the owners to swap. You can choose various sizes, swap with families overseas and no money need to change hands.
