Meet Mina of Formulate Heath
Former pharmacist Mina Khan has over 25 years experience in the health and wellness industry and a lifetime of experience in Indian Ayurvedic medicine. In November 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, she founded the nutraceutical company Formulate Health. The company’s product range offers a selection of 100% natural supplements that have been specially formulated to help improve and prevent an array of common health issues.
1.Can you explain to us how the idea for your business came to you and how the whole process kicked off?
I worked as a pharmacist for around 25 years and over that time I began to notice that so many patients were suffering from side effects of the medications they were taking. To counteract a lot of these issues, they’d often end up taking more medication to help alleviate their symptoms. In the end a lot of patients who had started out on just one prescription would end up taking a whole cocktail of medication each day to prevent (or more often just mask) negative side effects.
All my life I’ve had a keen interest in natural remedies and Indian Ayurvedic medicine, having been brought up in an Indian household where the spice tin was pretty much our medicine cupboard! Even while I was working as a pharmacist, I’d often recommend natural remedies for common ailments and they really do work! Overtime I just knew that helping to improve peoples’ lives using natural health remedies was my passion, which led to me to quit my job as a pharmacist and pursue my own business in the nutraceutical industry.
2.What were the biggest challenges you faced when bringing the idea to market?
Researching and developing formulas took a very long time! I only use the most effective, 100% natural ingredients that are branded and clinically tried and tested. The most important thing for me is using high quality ingredients that have proven health benefits and that I know are 100% safe.
Developing the business during the pandemic also brought about its own range of obstacles. Sourcing ingredients took a lot longer than it usually would due to restrictions in place, and the ingredients themselves were much harder to come by because of the increased demand for health supplements during the pandemic. Although this was a challenge, it’s been great to see more and more people investing into their health and wellbeing over the last year and I really hope it continues beyond the pandemic.
Creating our website was also a real challenge! Not only making sure the technical side of things and functionality was spot on, but researching health benefits of ingredients and writing easy to understand content to ensure that customers have all the information they need about each supplement. This was something I really wanted to get right.
3.Where do you think good ideas come from and what inspires you?
Good ideas come from passion! A lifetime of experience in health conditions and side effects of regular medicines definitely helps too. Finding solutions based on scientifically backed findings, lots of research and accumulated knowledge is what’s helped me to come up with some of my strongest ideas.
As well, personal experience is a big one for me. Having used many of the ingredients throughout my lifetime, such as turmeric and ashwagandha has given me a great insight into the benefits of these supplements. Speaking to friends, family members and colleagues about their experiences with general health and wellbeing woes and common treatments has also been extremely insightful too, and provided an excellent basis to form my ideas.
4.What are your company’s values and why are these things important to the business?
Using only the best, scientifically researched ingredients is our number one priority. Many of the supplements on our site contain branded and tested ingredients which ensures safety, quality and efficacy.
Another important ethos for us here at Formulate Health is transparency. We are always open and honest about the ingredients in our supplements and their potential health benefits. This is another reason why it’s so important to us that our formulations are as effective as possible. This is something we’re continuously researching and improving as time goes on.
5.What is next for your brand?
New product launches! We’re currently in the process of developing new formulations such as pre and probiotics for digestive health, as well as a formulation for brain health using ayurvedic ingredients that aren’t widely used or known about. We’re also always making improvements to existing formulations and looking to make the brand more sustainable. We’re reevaluating our packaging and currently looking into the option of providing refillable pouches for a more eco-friendly alternative.
We’re also looking to move towards fully plant based ingredients. Currently our vitamins and minerals are primarily vegetarian, but we’d love to be able to get to a stage where more people who have different dietary needs can use our supplements.
As the business becomes more profitable we’re also planning to support various charities and find ways to incorporate this into our long term plan.
6.What one piece of advice would you have for someone just starting out on their business journey or currently going through a setback?
Research your product and market inside out – make sure you have something new to offer, something to improve on existing products and take time to make sure every aspect of your business is perfected!
7.What resources and tools do you use to remain productive or up-to-date on industry trends etc?
For our business it is important to stay up to date with as much scientific research on new and innovative ingredients as possible. We’re always staying up to date on current health trends. One recent example being that for many people, the pandemic has led to an increased number of hours spent indoors. Because of this, Vitamin D supplementation is more important than ever and that’s’ definitely something we’ve worked with.
