Meet Zak Edwards of Prezzybox
Founder of Prezzybox. Fella of @beezeebeebee and various fluffy things. Proud Brummie. Gig Junkie.
The business has certainly had some bumpy moments including ships catching fire full of stock in the middle of the sea, the Karma Chameleon Phone fiasco, suppliers going out of business and pesky’ recessions’ amongst them. However, with a little luck and lots of determination, Prezzybox are going from strength to strength are still with us in 2019 and doing better than ever.
1. Can you explain to us how the idea for your business came to you and how the whole process kicked off?
I was working for a fairly old fashioned company in the gift space in the late 90’s and the internet was starting to take off. Companies like Boo.com and LetsBuyit were being valued at gargantuan amounts and I thought “I’m gonna have a bit of that”.
Luckily my Dad (Johnny E) had just sold his business so had some money burning a hole in his pocket, so I managed to persuade him that we should ‘have a go’ at this online business and the rest as they say is history!
2. What were the biggest challenges you faced when bringing the idea to market?
Getting orders! If we got more than one order a day we were lucky. It was very much a war of attrition! We went from one order a day, to two, to five and so on. It literally took years for us to actually look like a proper business. But we stuck at it and now we can get anywhere up to 6000 orders a day.
3. Where do you think good ideas come from and what inspires you?
I have a lot of ideas. All the time. But I think a lot of people do. The key is deciding on the ones which are any good and then having a team around you that can actually bring them to life. I’m very lucky in that I have an awesome bunch of guys working with me who are very adept at making things happen whilst I move onto the next shiny thing that excites me!
I get inspired by LOADS of things. Doing good things inspires me, as do people who are awesome at what they do. They make me want to be better.
4. What are your company’s values and why are these things important to the business?
You can read them here – https://www.prezzybox.com/blog/prezzybox-value-statement.aspx
5. What is next for your brand?
Lots! We’re looking more and more to monetise our assets and are moving in a number of different directions. In terms of Prezzybox we are opening our first physical store later this year and if this a success we’ll roll it out to another 20.
We’re also keen to monetise our tech and our scalable distribution so have launched a workplace rewards platform called myQdos (https://myqdos.com) to sit aside our school rewards platform. On Prezzybox we’re launching a new app called ‘Snappy’ which is really exciting. Watch this space!
6. What one piece of advice would you have for someone just starting out on their business journey or currently going through a setback?
Sh*t happens. Just keep on ‘pushing the flywheel’ and everything will get easier. Way too many people give up too early and you can’t. If you believe in what you’re doing them keep doing it till you make it.
7. What resources and tools do you use to remain productive or up-to-date on industry trends etc?
Where to start? I read lots of business books, blogs and follow lots of smart people on social media. I also watch lots of Youtube videos and documentaries. I also get inspired by people who are passionate about what they do!
I do however, think you can take inspiration from anywhere. For example Tommy Shelby (on the gloriously fantastic Peaky Blinders) recently said “when everyone else retreats, you attack” and that’s what we’ll be doing next time there is a recession!
