Meet Lucy of The Sleep Nanny
Lucy Shrimpton is one of the world’s leading child sleep experts, founder of The Sleep Nanny® and The Sleep Nanny Academy™ and author of The Sleep Nanny System. She has helped thousands of tired parents and children around the world to win bedtime battles and finally gain the gift of a good night’s sleep.
Lucy is an author, speaker, trainer and mother of two who knows first hand what it’s like to feel extreme sleep deprivation and face challenges with infant sleep. Lucy’s extensive learning in sleep consulting are accredited by The Royal College of Nursing and The Royal College of Paediatric & Child Health.
Through The Sleep Nanny Academy™ Lucy trains people to become certified sleep consultants and continues to mentor in her graduate programme. Lucy has an award wining podcast – The Sleep Nanny Show where she interviews well-known parenting entrepreneurs and influencers about their experiences and gives advice.
1.Can you explain to us how the idea for your business came to you and how the whole process kicked off?
After a year of planning and building I officially launched The Sleep Nanny® in 2014. The idea came to me following the birth of my first child where I experienced sleep deprivation and saw firsthand how horrendous it makes you feel. I was broken. My son then slept well as a baby but at around 15 months, his sleep unravelled and at 21 months, when my daughter was born, we decided to get some expert guidance from a sleep expert.
It was fascinating and I was captivated by the science as well as the impact it has on families’ lives. I reached a point where I could no longer sit back and see other families suffer unnecessarily when I could see that their little ones COULD be sleeping so much better than they were. So I retrained and decided to set up my own brand where I, and my team, not only give advice to parents struggling but also train others up who wish to become Sleep Nannies, in the Sleep Nanny Academy.
2.What were the biggest challenges you faced when bringing the idea to market?
The biggest struggle has been finding the time to do things. In the past I have probably wasted time on things that really weren’t important or impactful so it’s a matter of working out what can make the difference and what doesn’t. Either way, it’s essential to have hurdles or fail sometimes so that you can learn and find lessons in your errors to help you propel forward.
3.Where do you think good ideas come from and what inspires you?
I truly believe the best ideas come when we take time out and stop overthinking. This is why so many people have amazing ideas in the shower! My inspiration largely comes from thought leaders and high performers who are ahead of me on the journey and I listen to their audio books and podcasts which fill me with motivation.
4.What are your company’s values and why are these things important to the business?
Our values include integrity and individuality. We are non-judgemental and believe there is always a way to achieve whatever you set your mind on. Living the healthiest, happiest and most fulfilling life is the best way to summarize our company values. These things are incredibly important to me because they are at the core of what I stand for. We get one shot at this life and why shouldn’t each and every one of us do what we can to make it the best experience possible and do the very best for our children too?
5.What is next for your brand?
To scale and reach more exhausted families around the world! To do that, I need a little army of amazing sleep consultants so training more incredible people in Sleep Nanny Academy and offering the very best with my Dream Maker sleep program are the ways I intend to solve global sleep deprivation for parents and young children!
6.What one piece of advice would you have for someone just starting out on their business journey or currently going through a setback?
Have courage! It is the number one trait that has served me and you need courage in order to take the action, get out of your comfort zone and make things happen. Fear will hold you back in all areas of life. Remember that you get one shot to become all that you have the potential to be so don’t waste it.
7.What resources and tools do you use to remain productive or up-to-date on industry trends etc?
I keep up to date on social media, particularly instagram and Facebook. And I listen to podcasts that inspire me like Lewis Howes’ School of Greatness, James Wedmore and Carrie Green.
For day to day organisational work, I use Asana which helps me track all my tasks and stay organised with my team. I wouldn’t be without Zoom and my Google calendar, both used every day in my business.
