Meet Ben of MeetHugo
Ben Harper is a sales and marketing specialist and the Founder and CEO of MeetHugo.
1.Can you explain to us how the idea for your business came to you and how the whole process kicked off?
After selling my digital agency in 2017, I set up on my own working in data analysis & market research, which I’d always enjoyed focusing on during my time in digital marketing.
However, I wanted to find a solution for the problems I’d encountered in running the agency and run a subscription-based business – and the idea from Meet Hugo was then born.
I had the idea on the Friday, worked across the weekend to put together a Minimum Viable Product and a WordPress site, and I signed up our first client on the Monday!
2.What were the biggest challenges you faced when bringing the idea to market?
Being completely brand new to the market, and trying to do things differently to more traditional ‘lead gen’ companies meant we had to educate our prospective clients, and onboard them in a more in-depth way to understand our value.
This meant that we had to focus on ensuring that each step of the process offered intrinsic benefit to the prospective client through education and demonstrating exactly what our platform could do for them.
3.Where do you think good ideas come from and what inspires you?
Good ideas can come from anywhere – for me I talk a lot about ‘having the fear’. When you’re in your comfort zone and content, it’s harder to come up with ideas than when you’ve got a problem to solve.
My other source of inspiration is reading other founder’s stories and applying their experiences to the problems we’re trying to solve.
That’s not to say that every story needs to come from the Richard Branson’s of the world, it could be a small local startup doing something cool and different – it’s just a matter of connecting with something that makes me tick.
4.What are your company’s values and why are these things important to the business?
Our values are all around transparency, growth, and ownership – we’re transparent with each other and our clients, we focus on growing, and we want to own any issues and solve our client’s business dilemmas to ensure we deliver successful results down the road.
We’ve grown quite considerably over the lockdown and brought on many new staff members, which has meant that we’ve had to focus a lot of our energies on team building and making sure that everyone we bring onboard shares our passion and drive to succeed.
5.What is next for your brand?
We plan to expand into new European markets, and launch new features for our clients to enable them to make more sales and work in a more efficient way using our technology.
We’ve just recently moved into a new office in Peterborough to accommodate our growth, and we’re super focused on bringing on even more staff members and making this office a home-from-home once we’re able to return.
6.What one piece of advice would you have for someone just starting out on their business journey or currently going through a setback?
So many top entrepreneurs will tell you that reading is incredibly important. I think so too, not only does it help to expand your mind and help you understand different points of view, particularly when you’re having difficulties making decisions, but it’s a good way to relax too. I credit a good deal of the successes I’ve had to reading as much as possible
Overall though, I would advise anyone starting out on their business to back themselves, go all in, and to focus on the data – test everything, measure your successes and failures, and make your decisions based on data in this way to ensure you stay on the right path.
7.What resources and tools do you use to remain productive or up-to-date on industry trends etc?
I enjoy reading the tech press in general to see how markets are shifting, as well as using Twitter to keep up with my network of other founders to share the journey and support each other.
