Meet Rene of CEO Essence
As the owner and CEO of two businesses, CEO Essence and Risk Integrity Safety Knowledge, INC, Transformational Leadership Coach René Murata knows a thing or two about guiding with both purpose and compassion. Working to encourage more women to speak out and take charge, she hopes to show that collaboration and cooperation definitely do have a place in decisive leadership.
René Murata has only ever had one boss that was a positive role model, while many others sought only to belittle those they managed. But she knows from experience that in order to get the best out of people, you need to listen well, communicate effectively, and understand the power of your words. Now a Transformational Leadership Coach, she teaches women how to incorporate the best of the masculine and feminine energies in leadership, using a methodology that seeks to empower both manager and managed.
1.Can you explain to us how the idea for your business came to you and how the whole process kicked off?
I have been in male dominated industries for most of my adult working career. I have degrees in physics and math, both predominantly male. My other business is in gas & oil, predominantly male. I looked around and several things became very clear. One: even with a master’s degree in business management, leadership is not a given. Leadership is something you have or don’t have… it is NOT the same as management and few people I worked with had it. Two: women, in leadership, often feel like they must behave like a man to be accepted. Three: women rarely support other women rising into leadership. Four: and most important for me, compassion was not present. These four things greatly impacted me when I started my other business.
When I started Risk Integrity Safety Knowledge, I knew I wanted something different. I wanted to inspire my team. I wanted to be me. That means honoring BOTH my masculine and feminine energies. I wanted to uplift other women and finally, I wanted to bring compassion to leadership. I didn’t know how to do those things. I’d not witnessed or experienced it, so I had no blueprint to follow. I had to really play with ideas and concepts, learn by fire and make a few mistakes. I got there, fine tuning things as I went, so that I could support others along their way.
So, once I “got there” I started CEO Essence. I really intended to simply coach one on one when I started. However, after talking with more and more women in other industries, I am realizing that many women want to feel seen and heard, as their beautiful selves, and lead others in their industries. To support what was becoming a growing demand, I realized that I would have to systematize my processes, thereby creating a program that I can teach to several people at once.
Hence, Quantum Leadership Institute was born.
2.What were the biggest challenges you faced when bringing the idea to market?
There were two main challenges.
First, I had to get clear about what I wanted to do, and who I wanted to work with. I originally thought I wanted to work primarily with other healers, helping them bring forward their leadership. However, I quickly realized that that was not a great fit for me and what I was birthing into the world. I wanted to work with women in leadership. I want to work with leaders, women who have played small and who have struggled with breaking through their own inner ceiling to reach the heights of which they know, deep down inside, they are capable. I want this, because I figured out how to make that transition and want to see other women succeed…truly light up and succeed.
Second, there are a lot of women leadership programs out there now. There are also a lot of leadership coaches. Being seen and heard in that noise, and also recognised for the distinctly different approach that I bring has been a challenge.
3.Where do you think good ideas come from and what inspires you?
My experiences and the experiences of the women that I work with definitely inspires me. I also meditate routinely, which allows me to connect with my higher self and bring inspired action to my work.
4.What are your company’s values and why are these things important to the business?
Integrity – this establishes for me and my clients, both how trust can be built and the level of trust that can be built between us.
Authenticity/Vulnerability – I am who I am. I no longer apologize for my eccentricities and quirks. You might not like my eccentricities and quirks. Showing up like that requires authenticity and allowing you to feel what you feel requires vulnerability.
Compassion/Inclusion – Without compassion, there is no love, no acceptance, no humanness in people’s behavior. Compassion is an active acceptance of another person and inclusion is a result of that action.
Adventure/Courage -What is life without adventure? Dull! How do you experience that adventure? Courage! I bring this energy into everything that I do.
Knowledge/Growth – I am a seeker of knowledge, spiritual, emotional, psychological, etc. Growth is a direct result of my seeking. I bring my knowledge into my work, and I am constantly growing, shifting, learning through my learning.
Joy – Joy is pure energy. I love to laugh, play, dance, sing and be silly. It is the underline and exclamation point in a sentence. Joy is how one enJoys life.
Service – I could hold onto all of my knowing for myself, but then how much fun would that be? Who would I share my adventures with, or my knowledge and joy? What kind of color and flavor would my life have without all the different people that I have included in my circle? Service lifts up other people and it just feels good…it brings joy to me and others.
5.What is next for your brand?
CEO Essence is launching the Quantum Leadership Institute. I’ve been teaching various elements of the program for a couple of years now and have finally put it all together in a single program. I am really excited to bring it forward!
This program helps women go deep into the internal dialog that holds them back from stepping into their leadership. Then it teaches them ways to navigate through various team dynamics and finally provides them with business strategies and training to step confidently into a leadership role.
6.What one piece of advice would you have for someone just starting out on their business journey or currently going through a setback?
Get clear on your core values!!! So many people I know cannot list out their core values. If asked, they might pause and say uuhhmmm, “honesty”… “trustworthiness”… “knowledge”… “authenticity”. But they wouldn’t be clear, and they wouldn’t be able to give their definition or their why. Without that clarity, it is difficult to navigate through difficult times. It is difficult to find the right people. It is difficult to even want to continue, because you might work long hours at first.
7.What resources and tools do you use to remain productive or up-to-date on industry trends etc?
Hmmm, I follow various groups on LinkedIn. I read…a TON. I am also constantly taking courses in new things to learn, grow, and expand. My two businesses are in very different arenas, so I have different sources of information for each. However, I would say that, because of my time constraints, I rely heavily on my marketing director to point out things she comes across, and LinkedIn groups.
If you would like to include anything else about your journey, plans for the future or general information you would like us to cover, please include here:
So, in addition to my two businesses, I have an eclectic mix of “other” things that I do.
I am a Reiki Master, Teacher/Trainer, a certified Law of Attraction coach, a Light Body practitioner, a Desire Factor coach, and a Clarity Breathwork practitioner.
I am offering coaching groups for Desire Factor and Clarity Breathwork. These courses can be found under the CEO Essence umbrella.
